Arresting the menace of military banditry in Nigeria

El Rufai, the Senate and the Babangida Legacy
by Blessed Isi Momodu

A scenario similar to the colonial days in Africa is unfolding in Nigeria. In those awful days, Africans who dare ask or even fight for independence were regarded by the colonial authorities as psycopaths. This means to  demand for  freedom, truth and social justice is to be mentally deranged. In Nigeria, labour leader number one Pa Imoudu was often disparaged by the ravaging colonialists as insane because he was fighting for freedom and social justice. In Kenya, anicolonial elements were often referred to as psycopaths.

In Nigeria today, the notorious settlement culture under the dictatorship of Babangida has taken firm root in all aspects of our national life. It is within this context, one locates the very many bribery  and corruption scandals that have rocked the supposed legislature and the OBJ administration. It was the opinion of this writer that the Nigerian military with its inherent contracdictions was not in any position to midwife a genuinenly democratic Nigeria. Now, an  oppressive social system which Fela calls a demonstration of crazy  is daily snuffing out the lives of millions of helpless Nigerians . A very corrupt and murderous elite is managing this system for their western beneficiaries. The class character of this elite has been analysed in my previous article: Reflections on Bourgeois Politics in Nigeria on this website. While commenting on the unresolved cold blooded murder of a serving Attorney General and minister of Justice Bola Ige, Prof. Wole Soyinka recently also made reference to the existence of a murderous squard in the OBJ Presidency. Events sofar have revealed that to be part of the OBJ administration, wether in the Presidency or the Legislature, you have to be mean, crude, corrupt and murderous. Not to possess any of these negative attributes and serving in this administration is to sign one’s death warrant.

This is where one feels very sorry for mallam El Rufai. He has no doubt convinced most of us that massive bribery trailed the selection of OBJ’s henchmen. The take a bow saga in the selection of these men in the shamefless senate though still very fresh in our memory, only lends credence to the veracity of El Rufai’s confession. The poor mallam is being lampooned as a pathological liar by the senat of scandal, what a colonial style? Did Nzeribe not accuse the same Mantu of collecting millions of naira from the Presidency so as to scuttle the impeachment move against OBJ? The selection of the so called ministers of deceit was the anticlimax of a bidding system that started during the party primaries of the PDP nig Plc. The highest bidder got the party nomination to buy electoral votes from Adewusi reincarnate in the Police,  Balogun, alias Oga de hungry and INEC officials.

The fact remains that both houses of parliament are business ventures occupied by the highest bidders  from gangs like PDP and ANPP.The likes of Mantu and Zwingina could not have scaled through a fair and just party primary not to talk of winning an election. Did Wabara win any election to be preciding over how to share the oil loot? What makes these peolpe legislators? Is Omisore not a share holder of this business venture erroneously referred to as Senate? What a senate of shame, cheats and thieves. El Rufai was at least courageous enough to expose the hypocrisy of these corrupt  and rotten elites who over the years have mortgaged the future of Nigeria. The truth must be told. These insane actors or are they senators collected huge sums of money from most of the appointees to the knowlegde of the Presidency, PDP and the security agencies. It has been business as usual.

Mantu and Zwingina are in a serious trouble unless the matter is killed like the many befor it or they sacrifice El Rufai in anyway. It would be difficult for them to play the ethnic card because all of them are from the same geo-political zone. Many Nigerians do not have faith in any probe panel because it has become a way to cover up gross criminal excesses of the elites. The results are often manipulated and in most cases not made public. The only feasible punishment that will receive popular support is to begin a process of recall of these wrogue senators after all they did not actually win the election.

To arrest the crisis of federalism that is tearing the entity called Nigeria apart, the campaign for a souvereign national confernce should go beyond rhetorics , prodemocracy groups and genuine lovers of democracy should embark on concret actions to realise the conference as a panacea to the problems of Nigeria that have become mannifold and concatenated. "His corrupt military dictatorship like a ravaging viral epidemic wreaked havoc on the moral fiber of the Nigerian society to the extent that role models like Tai Solarin were rubbished by his tyrannical regime. His disastrous economic policy of SAP was so excruciating that an alleged Ebony magazine publication, widely circulated, exposing IBB as the most corrupt and richest army General in the world spurred the IBB must go nation wide riots in 1987 in which many Nigerians were killed. Today, Babangida is said to be worth 25 billion US dollars excluding the 12 billion dollars from 1991  Gulf war oil windfall which he refused to account for. His regime’s assassination of  Dele Giwa via a parcel bomb, closing of newspaper houses at will, smuggling Nigeria into Organization of Islamic Countries(OIC), annulling the political Bureau report in 1988, annulling the June 12th election in1993,are the mortal sins of Babandida against the people of Nigeria.
