"Election" 2003 in Nigeria: The
real losers
by Blessed Isi Momodu
To anyone that
has been a keen observer of the primitive and provocative bourgeois
politics in Nigeria, the result of the just concluded mock electoral
process would not be a surprise. After all, the Florida effect in the
selection of George Bush jr. as president of the United States
provided the impetus to these blind Nigerian copy cats of western
democracy to go on a rigging spree. This kind of politics has
maintained the same pattern since Nigeria was declared into existence
by the ravaging British colonial invaders. Each election or selection
process has always produced the same nauseating result. The winners
have always been and will continue to be( unless a change in the socio
system is effected) members of the ruling class which include retired
and serving military officers, their civilian counterparts and their
international backers.
It is on this
basis one finds it ridiculous that all the dominant bourgeois,
criminal gang of looters erroneously referred to as political parties
are trading accusations of monumental electoral fraud at each other.
Elections have always been rigged before the selection. Their well
known trick is to use FEDECO, NECO or INEC
to register more voters than are actually on the ground and just
allocate the figures to whoever is the highest bidder. How come the
North West has 14 million registered voters and the Southwest has a
paltry 12 million? Is Kano actually more populous than Lagos or Ibadan
that it should have more registered voters and more local governments?
The All Nigeria Peoples party (ANPP) or any of its twin parties would
have done exactly what the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) did if it
controlled the machinery of state at the federal level. PDP merely
perfected and repeated what the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) did in
1983 selection process. The various bourgeois parties, past and
present, whether NCNC, NPN, PDP or ANPP, whether civilian or military
are agreed on one point, that is to run a socio-economic system
directed by the IMF/World Bank that is a snare and deception for the
vast majority of Nigerians.
The military
dictatorship of Babangida applied for IMF loan in 1983, a process
initiated by the inept and corrupt Shagari civilian administration in
April 1982, IMF had requested for the 60% devaluation of the Naira
when exchange rate was one naira to 1.4 USD. After mass protests from
Nigerians, IBB was forced on the 12.12.85 to announce the rejection of
IMF loan only for him to come back through the back door to launch the
strategically adventurist and economically disastrous IMF inspired
Second Tier Foreign Exchange Market SFEM which saw the saw the 400%
devaluation of the Naira. This laid the basis for the excruciating
economic quagmire that Nigeria finds herself today. The corruption
infested PDP administration of OBJ expectedly since 1999 has
continued to implement IMF/World Bank economic policies to the
detriment of majority of Nigerians. The balance sheet of his
administration is a paralysed economy, stagflation, collapsed
educational and health systems with workers and pensioners owed
salaries, decaying infrastructures, mass unemployment etc. According
to INEC’s result, these issues did not count in the last selection
which it supervised.
Perhaps the
most dramatic aspect of the election was the OBJ coup in the South
west region. The Hausa-Fulani Oligarchy , head of the ruling class in
Nigeria since the era of the wild wild west has tried not only to
decapitate the Awolowo leadership in this progressive enclave but also
to whip the masses of this region to the main line of bourgeois
politics of retrogression in Nigeria. They tried Akintola, Abiola(
before the june 12 debacle), Omoboriowo etc
to no avail. This time around in the year 2003, their political son
OBJ with the active collaboration of the naïve,
deceptive Afenifere/AD political leadership
effected the agelong attempt by the Fulani leadership to subdue the
politics of resistance and progress in the south west.
From the rotten lot, the only genuine political
alternative was offered by chief Gani Fawehinmi of the National
Conscience Party (NCP) and Dr. Abayomi Ferreira of the Democratic
Alternative (DA.) But, unfortunately, they were brutally rigged out of
the selection process.
Many
commentators have given different interpretations to the sham
electoral process but two things are very clear, that the PDP Nig. Plc
will continue to vandalise Nigeria till the year 2003 and that the
real losers of this fraudulent process are the masses of this
potentially great part of Africa who are going to face another four
years of hope and despair. [back
