Egunje and Nigerian Journalism - a Reply to Peter Taylor's conjecture (Click here for his letter)
NigerianNews Editorial

Dear Mr. Peter Taylor,

it seems to us you do not comprehend our editorials. Atiku has confessed his own sin and Obasanjo has yet to admit his own culpability (if any) in it. Once Obasanjo's culpability is ascertained and he is guilty, both of them deserve to be sent to Kirikiri to serve the terms that befit their crimes. However, people like you do not take the crime seriously. It is not about Obasanjo trying to deny Atiku the Presidency because of the third term that Atiku opposed, it is about flagrant looting of the Nigerian treasury and the ensuing violation of the Nigerian people by the guilty duo if in fact Obasanjo is also guilty.

You may want to go and re-read all we have said so far, and you will find out that our anger is directed at Atiku because after he admitted graft, he went ahead to prepare himself for his presidential campaign while we think he should be brazing himself for some years in prison if we can get to remove his immunity or be prevented from running for the presidency forever. We do not see where Obasanjo has admitted guilt or found guilty yet, but once he does, he deserves the same fate. Thank God, Obasanjo is on his way out as well.

Lately, Atiku is circulating cheque stubs purportedly written by a known Obasanjo's friend to known Obasanjo's friends. One is said to be Obasanjo's girlfriend. However, can we discount the possibility of the lady (Lamide Adegbenro) coming out to say that she is in fact Fasawe's girlfriend and not Obasanjo? Obasanjo claims he cannot be bought, and that is why he wants to throw the book at Fasawe and Adenuga rather than allow gifts to prevent him from performing his duty, what do you say to that? Do you have to be an Obasanjo's friend to applaud that, if in fact what he is doing is putting duty over friendship? We cannot read people's mind and motives, we can only rest our judgment on what the actors themselves say. Atiku said he is a thief, but Obasanjo is also a thief. Obasanjo's culpability is yet to be proven, Atiku has affirmed his own. Do you get it?

The difference between you and the NigerianNews is that you treat this crime with levity, and we are livid by Atiku's flagrant dismissal of a serious crime as just a political feud and so, business as usual. We do not seek political parity (alias National character) in this case, we seek justice. If political parity is part of this justice, so be it.

To test your egunje theory, it would be nice if EFCC would direct its searchlight on us as well as all the Nigerian media, because you are right, there are some egunje passing hands right now, but you can be sure we are not part of it. If you know our pedigree, you will be very proud of what we do here. Maybe one day we will have an opportunity to tell that story.

You also asked a very important question "Who killed Bola Ige?" Before Bola Ige died, he urged Professors Wole Soyinka and Sola Adeyeye to rally round Obasanjo, because there are many "Apaniyans" (Killers) in PDP. He was worried these "Apaniyans" might kill Obasanjo. We at the NigerianNews are hoping that this fracas between Obasanjo and Atiku may lead to the identities of these Apaniyans who might have killed Bola Ige. A friend of Atiku, who it was said went in and out of the VP office on private errands while he was the Deputy Governor of Osun State was a suspect for a while, now he is a Senator representing PDP from Osun State at the National Assembly - stay tuned on that!

We are holding our breath that this reply is not returned undelivered as many Atiku peoples email have in the past few days.

Warmest regards,
Editor, NigerianNews.
